NPSG #2 tops 2006 list of compliance issues
The Joint Commission published its list of top standards compliance issues from January-July 2006, with NPSG #2, improving communication effectiveness, topping the list with a startling number of facilities found to be noncompliant. The February Joint Commission Perspectives reports that 59% of hospitals were cited for noncompliance with NPSG #2, which takes into account failure to comply with the requirements for reporting critical test results, standardizing a list of abbreviations, readback of verbal and telephone orders, and implementation of a standardized handoff communication approach.
Such a high percentage of noncompliance in this area shows that hospitals need to go back and assess what they are doing to adhere to this goal, although Sue Dill-Calloway, RN, MSN, JD, director of hospital risk management with OHIC Insurance Company in Columbus, OH, puts some of the fault on The Joint Commission.
