Validation survey may precede status change

JCAHO to make announcement in December

Learning objectives: After reading this article, you will be able to

1. identify the JCAHO's window for submitting an evidence of standards compliance

2. explain how to conduct sampling for measures of success

The JCAHO may conduct validation surveys to justify changing a hospital's accreditation status from conditional or preliminary denial to full accreditation, commission officials said.

Members of the commission met in September to discuss implementing a special validation survey to determine whether an organization's clarifying evidence would warrant moving it from conditional or preliminary denial, said Kurt Patton, MS, RPh, JCAHO executive director of accreditation services.

"If it looks like, through clarification, an organization will end up with regular accreditation, we may do a short survey," Patton said.

The JCAHO would announce any formal decision in the December Joint Commission Perspectives newsletter, Patton said. It was unclear at press time what the JCAHO would announce.

Submission deadline moved up

Organizations currently have 90 days to submit evidence of standards compliance after receiving a requirement for improvement (RFI) during a survey. That window will shrink to 45 days beginning on January 1, 2006.
