Della Lin, MD, chief executive director of continuing medical education at Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, and Glenn Krasker, MHSA, president of Critical Management Solutions in Wilmington, DE, provided the following answers to questions asked during the recent HCPro audioconference "JCAHO's Patient Safety Goals for 2006: Tips and recommendations for compliance."

Q: Does a time-out have to be administered before or after the anesthesia induction of a patient?

A: Lin: It actually is not defined in the JCAHO goal [the Universal Protocol]. It needs to be done before incision. I would prefer it being done before induction, but the organization may decide to do it after induction.
