Life-threatening infection affecting more patients than previously estimated

The life-threatening bacterium Clostridium difficile is between 6.5 and 20 times more common than previously believed, according to a survey conducted by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

The study found that 13 out of 1,000 patients are either infected or colonized with the bacterium, or 7,178 patients on any given day.
