Who should handle moderate sedation preassessments?

Q: For several years, our physicians have conducted the preassessments required for moderate sedation. I have been asked to locate appropriate supportive wording that indicates that a physician must conduct this preassessment, and not another member of the team.

I have not been able to find anything that supports this in writing. My search has included Joint Commission standards and CMS regulations. Is there something I’m not seeing? If physicians shouldn’t be moderating sedation preassessments, who should?
